Dams and Rivers in the Western Cape

E-mail Print PDF

Please feel free to send us your information on fishing waters in your area.

Here are the listings for this area so far:

Clanwilliam Dam
Clanwilliam is situated 220km from Cape Town on the West Coast. It is a lovely little town with many friendly locals. The fishing is mainly for Large or Small Mouth Black Bass although there is also the indigenous Clanwilliam Yellow fish. It has a excellent dam for bass as it is full of structures which range from rock caves to trees and other various structures. I have had lots of luck at this dam from the bank so a boat is not a necessity, but will help you land the lunker. The dam is large and water levels vary quite drastically from summer to winter. If you take the road out towards Klawer you can also do some fishing in the river, which believe me has some huge bass in it. Hint: Night fishing at this dam can be productive.

CIRCLE HOOK - RIGGING

E-mail Print PDF

Having got this far with your interest in Circle hooks, let's make sure that the hooks that you are interested in using are in fact true Circle Hooks. There are some hook patterns that are occasionally sold as 'cirlces', but are really 'Kahle' hooks, and these renown for their 'deep-hooking' abilities; the opposite of what we wish with our 'Circles'!

CIRCLE HOOKS - TARGET SPECIES

E-mail Print PDF

As Circle Hooks are so new to the market and a lot of enquiries have been raised about their sizes and what fish,
we have set out some of our preferences in the hope that they will be able to help you in deciding which circles hooks
are the best for your kind of shark angling (and some other species). These are our suggestions and should not be taken
as the gospel on species and circle hooks. All the hooks shown on this page are Mustad 39906BL.

LEERVIS — The answers to their Southern African migration

E-mail Print PDF

by Dr.Warren Potts

TIMES have changed. The media, no doubt, has contributed. No longer are fishermen solely feverishly pursuing and killing their victims. Rather, there seems to be a need to understand, a will to appreciate and a hope to conserve their quarry.

I obtained overwhelming evidence of this after I published an article entitled “Leervis and the curious angler — Looking for answers to Southern African migration” (see SKI-BOAT November/December 2007). This article was written in response to questions raised by Johan Smal in the previous issue of this magazine.

Jigstar Africa Newsletter 8th July 2010: Some Good Fish Pics from Hells Gate

E-mail Print PDF

hg9 Hi all Jiggers & Poppers. We trust that winter has provided you with the perfect opportunity to get all your gear ready for Spring and Summer, not long now until everyone is on the water again.

Andre, Greg and I returned from Hells Gate 2 weeks ago from a ‘recce’ trip prior to the August adventure with Chris Wong and Richard Dobbinson. Please note that final bookings for this trip close in 2 weeks time so if you are considering joining us, commitment is needed at soonest.

One can only say that Earl and Linda Strydom have created an amazingly luxurious and relaxed environment that is great in every way. The idyllic location, the magnificent appointment of the Lodge, the wonderful service and attention to detail shown by the staff, the excellent food, and of course the great fishing leave nothing to be desired! We were there into the last week of June, yup mid-winter. The water was cold, around 22Deg C and even then the fishing was good. Our main objective was to validate the “Jigging Spots” for the August trip , and this we did. We found the Tropical Yellowtail, the Greater Amberjack and other resident species such as Rosie and Green Jobs, King Mackerel (Couta) etc. The warmer waters, and hungry fish of August are calling....... there will be many bent rods and good fish, and an experience not to be missed.

What’s on your mind, red stumpnose?

E-mail Print PDF

Red stumpnose are endemic off South Africa and occur from False Bay to Margate, although they are more common south of East London.

They have steep foreheads which, in males, become increasingly pronounced and bulbous as they get older. They have strong molars which they use to crush prey such as redbait, urchins, octopi and crabs.

Although red stumpnose are good to eat, they have been over-exploited. Presently they may only be caught once they have reached a minimum size of 30cm and anglers may only catch one fish per person per day.
