I recently had the privilege of having a thorough look at this little item due for release sometime later this year... October 2011
Here follows a comprehensive review of the Penn Fathom Star Drag reels...

Matt black finish... a handsome reel!
SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
The manufacturer says:
The Penn Fathom Star Drag Reels feature the revolutionary Live Spindle design. This is the reason the new Fathom Reel is the most castable reel in the market place. The improved configuration allows the spool to spin independently of the spindle and pinion gear, which significantly reduces friction experienced from the extreme acceleration of the spool when casting. Other reels using a "fixed spindle" design slow the rotation of the spool and reduce casting distance. Additionally the Live Spindle improves the retrieve of the reel because the spindle and pinion do not need to turn relative to each other during heavy loads, unlike a "fixed Spindle" reels that result in a difficult retrieve and erratic drag.
That's what they said about the Torque!
Penn Fathom Star Drag Reel Features:
Full Aluminium metal body and side plates
Machine-cut marine grade bronze main gear with hardened stainless steel pinion
Versa-Drag™ system with HT-100™ washers
Live spindle with free floating spool
Internally adjustable centrifugal braking system
Line Capacity Rings
5+1 Shielded stainless steel bearing system
Instant anti-reverse bearing with silent back up ratchet
I reviewed the FTH30, which is similar in size to a Saltist 40/Torium 20, and slightly smaller than the Torque 40. (About 1.5cm in spool width).
LINE CAPACITY
The TRQ40 and the FTH40 have the same line capacity. We were able to spool the reel with 400m 0.24mm PowerPro braid backing and 200m of 0.45mm mono topshot.
The Penn TRQ40 and the FTH40 claim to have the same line capacity as the Saltist 50H.
We found this claim to be inaccurate. The line capacity of the Saltist is at least 10-15% more.
The line capacity of the FTH40 is similar to the Torium 30.
WEIGHT
Although the reel is similar in size to a Saltist 40/Torium 20, it is significantly lighter than both of these reels!
How about 22% lighter than a Saltist??
18% lighter than a Torium?? That's pretty amazing.
FATHOM 30 - 18.4oz
TORQUE 30 - 22oz
TORIUM 20 - 23oz
SALTIST 40 - 24oz
FREE SPOOL
The Fathom range of reels boasts the same revolutionary "Live spindle" design as the Torque series. Having recently reviewed the Torque, I was keen to spin this reel up to see if it could match the spin speed of the Torque. Remember, this reel is taken out the box, no tuning whatsoever, spun up and timed until it stops... I was blown away... it spun even longer than the Torque!!! Never thought it was possible. The Torque spun for 3min 10sec; The Fathom did 3m 34sec. Simply unbelievable for an out the box reel!
Now, you should be asking yourself, what good does it do? What does this phenomenal spin time help, if a reel like this spins uncontrollably on the cast??
Let's open it up....
Remove the LHSide Plate, and what do we find...?
Good thick robust screws!! (clap) Each with it's own Teflon washer!! Double (clap) !!
Then, to my surprise, inside the LHS spool was the most sophisticated Spring loaded Centrifugal braking system I've seen!!Easily removable entirely, or in pieces...This was really exciting....!! Couldn't wait to cast the reel to see what the difference would be with the Brake blocks in place (as compared to the TRQ series, which doesn't have the Brake block system).
Casting...??? Like a dream... perfectly controllable, just like any other multiplier! None of the outrageously fast spinning of the TRQ series! This system is impressive!! It almost seems to me that it kicks in when the inertia is big enough to warrant the braking? Amazing.
I look forward to doing some more casting work with this reel...
But let's continue...
One of the nicest things about the Fathom, is it's robust foundation... the screws throughout, are all thick and sturdy, so easy to work with...
A good solid Handle screw that fits into a matching female thread block... very innovative.
Then, delving deeper... the Anti-reverse clutch Inner sleeve... looks awfully long!!! Could it be that Penn have gone the route of doubling the length of the Anti-reverse bearing? Surely not?!Ok.... it seems that they have!
One longgg Anti-reverse Roller bearing! Meaning Instant Anti-reverse. No play whatsoever. Any chance of an Anti-reverse failure? Not with Double Dog Pawls as well!!!! :shk Yep.
Ok, so let's check out the DRAG SYSTEM...Yup, true's Bob.... it's the same HT-100 washers used in the TRQ series... proper Carbon fibre Drag washers, keyed too, giving a 20% increase on the Standard Drag of any of it's competitors...The Drive Gear is Marine grade Bronze, and the Pinion gear is stainless steel. Ok now I'm starting to get worried... how did Penn manage to do this? Must have compromised something, surely... let's check under the Drive shaft plate... maybe they put a bushing in there...? Nope... proper Stainless steel bearing. Total of 5 bearings thro' the reel, +1 Anti-reverse, which matches all the others in the same class...
REEL CROSSBAR
In the TRQ series, there was a problem with the crossbar over the reel... it was constructed wayyy too thick, so that the thickness made the bar too low, relative to the spool, so that a R/Surf angler really battled to put a decent leader knot on the reel. Many resorted to Wind ons, even in the smaller leader range to counter-act this.
And this is what the Fathom looks like when full....
So how much would you expect to pay for a reel like this.... :hnthnt: With the technology of the Trini A's and Saltiga's... with it's own Live spindle design...?
R4000?? R5000?? ... maybe more...??
So how much then?
How about the OFFICIAL recommended retail price of.... R1899??????????????
(Editted.)
You can buy TWO of these reels for the same price as a Torque?!?!?!?
CONCLUSIONIf ever I saw a good, no, make that GREAT value reel, then this is it...
If ever I saw a reel that is gonna blow the South African Rock and Surf industry completely and utterly away..... then this is it!!!
Get in the queue guys... this one is going to go fast!
