The saying, does the same thing happen twice, did indeed occur. In January this year, I witnessed a shark pick-up which took Wep's rod and reel into the sea and ultimately resulted in shark score one point and Wep 0. The shark pick-up broke the lower butt of the rod off in the stand and after a while the rod appeared +- 250m in the sea, then dissapeared. An expensive loss of a Saltiga and Assassin rod.
Below is a picture of the piece of butt which was left.
Ok, this will not happen again, ja right.
Yesterday, Wednesday 2009/11/25, Wep was fishing at Macassar (blockhouse) with a bunch of guys. He had a slide bait out, whilst the other anglers were fishing for edibles.
Again a huge shark pick-up, this time the rod and stand was pulled out of the sand and off into the sea. Wep tried in vain to catch-up to the rod, but sharkie was faster. Two hours later the rod appeared +- 200m out. Nobody could cast that far. So clever Wep, phones a friend who has a cayak. His mate is stuck in traffic, so desperate measures needs a desperate idea. Wep races off to Surfer corner, finds a surfer who was willing to drive all the way back and help.
Although very hesitant to paddel out, the surfer does his deed and retrieves the rod and reel.
A thankful Wep finds that only one eye of the Loomis Sharkie rod was broken and the Trinidad 50 reel had a small dent on the side.
Moral of the story, stay close to your rod.
I am waiting for a picture of the surfer paddling back with the rod and reel, will post as soon as I get it.
