Die Dam 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
So the long awaited trip came and gone. Destination Die Dam & Rietfontein. We left about 14h30pm Friday after rounding up everyone. We wanted to pump @ Palmiet but when we got there we saw that the river came down and there was no way we were getting prawn there. So we off to pump @ Hermanus. Get there and we get Dullah & Co pumping. They off to Arniston, Struis and Aghulas.

We get out prawn and off to Die Dam. Get there settle in and Sleepy makes a dangerous Potjie. Everyone invited to eat but some guys already ate. The team was Riyaad, Riyad, Rory (Ridoh vir die weekend lol), Fuad, Moeneer(Makes), Yaseen, Haroun, Safiek and Myself.

Makes and Yaseen brought a trailer just for the 2 of them. Friday night saw no fishing. We decided to sleep well and get up Saturday for some serious fishing. Got up @ 4am to fish Rietfontein, Got done and left for Rietfontein. Got there @ about 6am. Water dropped 2hrs already, fished the 1st spot and I got some bites felt like Gallie but I threw a 5\0 hook , then 10 min later Sleepy lands a gallie , he was using a 3\0 after that it went quite as the water dropped. We moved to a low tide area where there was basically nothing happening for the whole day. I collected some Gups while I was waiting for the fish to bite. The locals only use redbait there. We got nothing and decided to move, Myself ,Sleepy , Safiek & Fuad moved to another spot, we tried some baits but nothing the Waves were big , Anything from 5-7m. I stood on a rock that was 50-70m from the wave and it felt like 2012, that wave looked dangerous crashing to towards the rocks. Only stayed 10 min and left. Made lekker lunch and decided that we head back and go rest a bit, Relaxed back at the Dam and I fished a bit in front of the house. Nothing happening , made some lekker braai and got ready to fish. The other guys fished when we came back but nothing. Went out 1hrs before low and fished till 23h00 and called it as it was dead. Rested well and got up to fish Buffelsjag. We couldn’t drive to where we wanted to be as the dunes shift where the tracks were. So we walked. Got to the 1st spot and Rory’s 2nd cast redbait and prawn on his new setup 110H & SL30. He lands a Steenie measuring 68cm the length to weight says 3.8kg but the spring scal says 2.5kg. I think its about 3.4kg. The spring scale works better with big fish, its more accurate. Then some of us start moving off to other holes. We fishing and its quiet, then I get a Rockod(Klipvis) watse rockod LOL. Cast again and I get stuck , I break off and start reeling in and then Harouns Rod Sak and the Ratchet is screaming, short pause and again. He reckons it’s the Bamboo. I tell him Bamboo doesn’t run twice and not that fast. He reels in and says it feels off and it bamboo. I maintain it isn’t. The closer he gets he says whatever it is is still on , I tell him it’s a fish. Lo and behold he reels in a 6kg steenbras beaut.

We packed up @ 1pm and left @ 2pm.

Great post and lovely to read.

You right - bamboo doesn't run twice, and def not at speed... nice bamboo steenie that.

Still wondering about that "dangerous potjie"

Cyn & Stef, always a pleasure posting our trip here. After all we visiting your area. It's been a while since we were there, still need to get to Struisbaai this year.

That potjie had a lekker habanero chilli in there
