TOPIC: Struisbaai Plaat

Struisbaai Plaat 1 Year, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
Good day all,

I will be proceeding to Struisbaai end September and would like to know what the fishing prospects are around that time of year especially along the plaat? What species should I target and what bait to use for same species?
Also, any other locations that one can fish at in the surrounds?

I fished the plaat last year September for a brief period while staying in Agulhas and caught a nice size shad/elf. Very keen on catching something again.

Regards,
Gavs

Hey there Gavs, apologies boet I did not see your post on the plaat otherwise I would have ansered a lot quicker. Bit busy on my sede here. Well September the weahter shoudl be a lot hotter than now, which means fishing should be better as well. Good spot for the seasonal galjoen, kolstert, belman, steenbras, cob, elf and off course the sharkies. I have also caught a St. Josephs there before and it's a nice fighting fish. Bait varies from sardine and chokka, bloodwurm, prawns, rooi aas (red bait), white mussel and live mullet. There are numerous places to fish, either in front of the parking place, to the left, +- 100 meters or to the right about 50 meters down. Alternatively stop at Argonauta park where there are points to enter as well. Simply check where the "fishing vehicles" are parked. As with any other spot, Die Plaat depends on the right wind, right tide, currents and what you want to target, so prepare a bit for the trip and be sure you know what it is you want to target. Sandbanks for cob and steenbras and just behind the drop off for lolstert, galjoen and belman. If there is no strong current, fish with live mullet, no sinker and "walk" the bait as it swims down the channels (sloepe). Have seen an ok pick up cob after cob like that before while standing and getting zero bites! Good spot at night as well, where night time you don't have to cast that far as fish come in close to shore. But be prepared, there are monster fish out there\!

Tight lines boet and enjoy, maybe I'll bump into you there sometime.

Hi Amberjack,

Thanks for the above. You said that there are "monster" fish out there...that's exactly what I'm wanting to target. I wouldn't mind hooking onto a 8 kg kob/steenbras. It's been long since the days where I have used the expression, "On dad!" and definitely hoping that I get some good on's while I am out there.

What size elf/shad are normally caught there?
When I was out there last year, I managed to land one sized elf/shad. Was a good experience as I was fishing the plaat at the parking area next to Langezandt complex (I think) at around 18:00 the evening. Weather was overcast. Water was flat like a mirror. I baited up using a strip of sardine. As soon as my bait hit the water, I was on with the fish and was lucky to have landed it as I was not using steel trace. When I landed the elf/shad, it bit through my nylon.

Once again, thanks for the info.

Went fishing Die Plaat at the entrance yesterday. Nice gullies and holes and sand banks. Used fresh wonder worm but after 2 hours between 3 of us no bites.

We saw an angler walking towards us from the left hand side and lo and behold - he stopped and showed us his catch of the day (all caught on bloodworm)
4 kg cob
60cm belman
75 cm Steenbras

All 3 were caught within 30 minutes of each other - he was fishing from 11 am and caught the fish around 2.

Shows you there are fish out there, it is a matter of perseverance. Will be back again this afternoon!!

Awesome Stefano!

Unlucky you never managed any bites. Wishing you luck for later today.
I can only hope I am that lucky when I'm out there.

Tight lines...

Today between 6 anglers fishing the plaat, only small 'kolsterte' came out. The guys are not very happy, although the water is warmer than last week, and apparently the water is so clear, you can see your feet when wading in up to chest height.

Thanks C. You know it's no wonder the fish did not bite, if I was a fish and had to stare at a bunch of "ou tone", I would also loose my apetite. Other than the blacktails that scavange on virutally anything, the guys probably had a nice Pedicure! lol

Summers on the way, have not held my 14 foot rod for a long time. Feel like a sissy boy stuck on the rivers edge waiting for something to happen, but so far to no real avail!

Hi Gavs,

The fishing was very quiet in Struis this weekend - not much from the harbour wall, except a few sand steenbras. I know of a beauty of a steenbras that was caught at the Plaat on saturday on believe it or not - chokka wrapped in our dried worm (still dry).
