Hi Dan,
Yes, Struisbaai plaat is a favourite spot for many an angler, and also, many of the western cape clubs fish there regularly.

I am by far not the expert on the plaat, but can say the following.

It is fairly safe in the area. This does not mean you can let your guard down, as we always have to be prepared for something. We have no problem leaving our car at the parking area and newer had a problem with break inns etc.

Also, you should be safe at night. just follow the basic rules... don't go alone. go in group and stay together etc.

As for the fishing. The Plaat works best at night for Cob etc. but you need live bait to be more successful. During the day, you will also get fish, but not as much.

If you into non eds, then you will get monsters during the day. We landed a 175kg odd raggie about a month ago.
The harbour wall in the evening, or even 'the las' just south of harbour always produces during evening / early morning. Eld / Shad, odd cobbie and off course, always a good shark around as well.

A couple of Garrick was taken off the las a couple of weeks ago in the 10kg plus range.

Depends on waht you want to do.

Best is to talk to Stefano closer to your trip. He stays in Struisbaai permanently and knows the area much better. There are many excellent fishing spots in Struis.

Hey Dan

Struis plaat offers a variety of fish and bait depends on what you want to go for. The entrance as far as I know where you drive in (park) is covered with soft sand which means you can't park that close to the beach, so walking's going to be the order of the day (roughly 200 + meters to the beach ) Live bait is a must for cobbies and even Bronzies, but so are fresh chokka and sardine. Hook live bait, no sinker, cast into gully and let it swim freely, cobs just love the presentation. Steenbras (when they are there) love worm, bloodwurm, moonshine etc. , which you can pump on the plaat, but more so towards Argonauta's side, which is an alternative place to park as walking to the beach is quicker.

Behind the drop off guys catch Belman, Galjoen and also Blacktail. Red bait, white mussel, prawns are all good baits, but again it depends on what you want to catch. I was picked up one early evening with a combo of chokka and sardine of the plaat, ended up puling me towards the sea, was huge and powerful, but my line burned off (&^%$#$^) Early morning, late afternoon are good times to fish and depends on the weather, overcast conditiions, mist are also good times. Hope it helps.

Gents, thanks for the replies -helps alot already...

I'm planning to try and get some live bait from the harbour during night time... what is the easiest - small pieces of chokka and small hooks?
Last year I fished the harbour just before summer I only manage to catch babers & bangle sharks about 13 of them.

Amberjack you were talking about the Argonauta's side. where about is this entrance or spot?? And then also regarding the bloodworm and prawn, can it be pumped anywhere on the plaat or is there aslo special spots to pump.

I'm already burning to hit struis... Cant wait.

regards

Hey Dan

Harders (live bait) can be caugt using no 12 or 10 hooks, only swivel or small piece of cork with a touch of lead on the side of it but preferably NO sinker. I use very small pieces of sardine but chokka will work as well, together with bread (the low carb one) ha ha.

As you drive into Struis you past the little coloured community on your left, straight road, just around the corner from there, your very first turn off is Argonauta. Once on this road drive straight ahead where right at the bottom you will probably see cars parked across the road. IE when you stop at the last stop, drive over the road and park. Alternatively turn left at this stop and drive into Langezandt fishing village where on your right you will find 3 wooden walkways. Stop next to them and walk the little way to the beach.

Best bet is to bring prawn with as they are very scarce in struis, but there is a spot at "Piet se huis" past Suiderstrand where you can pump. but it's a really stiff walk. The worm can be pumped either left or right from where you enter the beach from these spots. Use a bag similiar to the ones you get onions etc. in, fill with sardine, smash it, tie a line to the bag and drag it across the sand. Watch out for bloodworm holes and also the moonshine worm that stick their little feelers out. Pump quick, but deep. Moonshine worm: throw in clean water, take out, on newspaper, let it dry, salt and leave for a while. They go really tough.

I'll find your mail adress and send some pics which will help to find these spots.
