Hard days work at Strandfontein 1 Year, 10 Months ago Karma: 2
On Saturday 2010/04/10, Wep, Wynand, PlayOn and myself had an early start. Namre and Elfkiller joined us later.
Two small hornback skates in the 5kg range was landed by Wep and myself.
Then, Wep was picked-up and the leader was bitten off. At the same time PlayOn was picked-up and the shark dropped the bait.
Straight thereafter I was pick-up and after 45 minutes the snell hook (hoodlum 11/0) of the steel trace was bent open by the shark. A massive fight. Namre joined us and on his first cast he hooked a massive huge raggie which we lost in the surf. The fight was half and hour, judging on the size we saw in the surf, it was in the 150 to 200kg range. The barbles hook came out of the mouth. Really bad luck Herman as the fish was so close and we just about had her.
Wynand landed a smoothy of about 4kg. A hard days work with very sore bodies.
The first pic is of Namre fighting the raggie.

A 11/0 hoodlum that bent open due to pure power of the shark.

Ish, that hoodlum is not looking to good.

I have also caught a number of fish in circle hooks, and not one of them was gut hooked. The big difference is in the mindset of not trying to set a hook but merely tightening the line.

The other problem most people have is in the setup of the bait. We are so used to setting up nice baits with J hooks that we forget that to set up your bait with circle hooks you need to set your circle hook freely - therefore a different setup is required for the hooks to work properly.

Species caught on circles by myself so far:
Red Roman
Red Seenbras
Santer
Cob
Geelbek
Yellowtail
Spotted Gully
Smooth Hound
Tope

Still going to catch a gallie, steenbras and belman on one
