Morning Kimmiei and welcome to OA, hope you will enjoy our great site with a bunch of fantastic folk.
I was in the same position, my 2c worth, go for any of the Saltist range. If you can afford it go for the Saltist 50, best available. Don't do away with the SL 50, excellent reel, caught my first bronzie on a SL50.

hi there,

here we go again, but without having to start a fist fight, here is my 2c worth.

Both reels is good. Both reels has street cred. they are very similar in what they do etc.

The serious fishermen here in the Cape, (club angling guys) use both. They all have bar fights afterwards on the best reel. So, to choose one will be difficult.

at the end of the day it is up to personal choice. Gold / Silver... who cares.

Personally I prefer the Daiwa saltist.

My oldest Saltist 50 is now about 6 years old. Still as good as new, apart from normal wear and tear.

I have another saltist 50, about 1 year old, and this one is specifically setup for shark hunting

Just bought a Saltist 30, which I will use for spinning on a light rod.

Bottom line, your choice should be what you are comfortable with including budget.

As you have already a SL50, stick with the brand, you will not be dissapointed.

Go for broke, get a Saltiga 50, load with 600m 50lbs braid en 180 meter .55 topshot. Add a T-Line tapered leader. Get some Non return slides, a couple of yellowtails and ask Martin why we always wait just 1 more hour at the water.

If you go through this form, then I can almost say that 60% plus of the big fish was caught on Daiwa.

We have tested the Daiwa's extensively at the water. We have seen line been taken at serious speeds from our reels and whe have also landed some very memorable fish in the last 2 seasons.

We complain about a lot, we have had broken rods, lost serious quantities of line, sinkers, slides etc. but no-one has ever complained that their saltist wasn't up for the job at hand.

And in the same vain, don't think there was many complaints about the people using Shimano either.

Your skill as an angler outweighs your tackle quality big time, but then also don't expect to use a drop stot rod with a coffee grinder to land a fish of 100kg+.

The Saltist 50 is an excellent all rounder. You can catch big sharks and Shad!
The Torium 30 is an excellent all rounder. You can catch small sharks and Shad!.. hier kom kak

I've got 2 Torium 30's and love them. And the SA record bronzie (over 220 kilos) was caught on a Torium 30!

To be honest - there are some things to watch for - on my one reel the cup washers had some rust after a while, so clean and oil regularly. And the anti-reverse dog needs upgrading after a while.

A friend of mines Saltist had corrosion on the screws of the housing after 2 months, had to drill them out.

So, much of a muchness. If you've already got a Daiwa and you're happy, stay with Daiwa. I'm staying with Shimano.
