Is it just me getting older and more cranky, or is the weather really changing? It is a question that I ask myself more and more often these days. It is also a topic I hear discussed by disgruntled fishermen on a pretty regular basis. It is said that the human memory/power of recollection is very subjective. I am not so sure. There must be some truth in the opinions if everyone I speak to has a similar opinion.

I.e. Our weather patterns are indeed changing. Once again this past winter produced some ferocious storms and even in November we had the mother of cold fronts battering us into submission. It certainly did nothing to dispel the feeling that, either we are moving closer to the south pole, or the south pole is moving closer to us. Or its weather is anyway.

In addition to this, one wipes the poo out of ones eyes and guess what, another year has bitten the dust. 2010 is barrelling down on us faster than we could imagine and, it would seem, faster than we can finish our stadiums for the 2010 WC. WC stands for world cup, not toilet! Summer is however muscling its way in and our fishing season has been a bit of a roller coaster ride thus far. First, some info on the tuna..........

OFFSHORE
At the beginning of October a couple of boats from the Gordons Bay Boat Club put to sea for the tuna grounds and hit the jackpot. First day of the "season" and the yellowfin tuna literally ate them up. We went out a day or two later and only managed to get a load of longfin tuna, but they were really classy fish and averaged around 19kg. Our next trip produced good yellowfin and so the season really got underway with a bang. The first two weeks of October produced some magnificent fish. On one day we had three fish of over 90kg and one of 100kg. Jason Brink caught a fish of 97kg and his very next fish was another of 100kg. Not many anglers have caught a yellowfin of 100kg, much less two such fish in a row. We managed 5 or 6 trips for the first half of October and every trip yielded good fish. Then, inexplicably, the fishing for the next couple of weeks went off. There were still fish around, but nothing like the previous two weeks. THEN came THE cold front and screwed everything up. NW winds up to 45knots, big seas and the water in the canyon went pea soup green. The fish don't like pea soup and they went west, literally . Next we heard some of the bigger commercial vessels were getting good fish northwest of Cape Town, but too far for us to get to. And that is how it has been since. A few fish have been caught here and there, but nothing to get excited about. I suspect we will still have some good catches, but the water needs to come right. If that happens, I am sure the yellowfin and longfin will put in an appearance again. November is a month when mother nature is very fickle about the weather, but usually when we can get out, the tuna fishing is very good. Not so this year. It is the quietest November I have on record.

INSHORE AND FALSE BAY
Cape Point has been a pretty cool place to fish in the last six months or so. I am under correction here, but I think yellowtail have been at the point right through winter and fish were caught there every month of the year. Usually the months with an "R" in them are yellowtail months. Clearly the yellowtail did not read the same book and no-one told them they were supposed to go away. I did not hear any complaints from the fisherfolk and some guys did really well right through the cold months. The 'tail are still there and a couple of days ago I saw vast schools of fish busy with spawning activity at Rocky Bank. So, we look forward to some good fishing as soon as their urge to pro-create has abated a little. From a charter point of view, it looks good for December and if our visitors can't get out to catch tuna, at least we can have a good time with the yellowtail. We hold thumbs for some good weather over the holiday period.

False Bay has been a bit bleak and apart from a few good cob catches, not much else is going on. The shark boys on the beaches have been having a blast with the bronze whalers and if you ever want your arms pulled off, join one of our guides and spend a day targeting BIG sharks from the beach with surf tackle. Personally I prefer things with scales, but I can understand why the guys get excited about catching bronzies. They are big (up to 200kg) and mean and really pull hard.

An interesting report I heard was of a red steenbras of 13kg caught off Gordons Bay harbour wall last week. Apparently the angler returned the fish unharmed to the water. In the process it harmed him by giving him a goodbye bite on the arm! The report is unconfirmed, but if there is truth in it, it is most certainly the biggest red steenbras caught in False Bay for many a year and the first one I have ever heard of being caught off G Bay harbour. Strange times and strange catches........

STRUISBAAI - CAPE AGULHAS
Struisbaai has been very dead. Until recently, i.e. a week ago or so, the water was still cold and according to the local guys very little has been happening. A few yellowtail have been caught on the banks on spinners and thats about it. The water has now warmed up a bit and though it is by no means warm yet, hopefully things will start livening up. I can hardly believe Christmas is once again upon us and shortly we will be taking Tyler down there for the marlin competition and to do some different kind of fishing again. Last year we were at Struis for about six weeks. We had some really good fishing (and some
bad) and have decided this year to go there for three months. We will be doing marlin trips, trips to the 45's for red steenbras and whatever else bites down there and trips to the Alphards and the banks in search of yellowtail. Those of you who joined us last year feel free to contact us about coming down again. Those of you who did not join us, Jan, Feb and March are the months when we will be there. Drop me a line and I will give you details. Hopefully we will catch one of those big black marlin that we lost last year. Till next time, tight lines and good fishing. May you all have a happy festive season and a prosperous 2010, FIFA World Cup and all!

Regards - The SSS team
