Zambezi (bull) sharks, Carcharhinus leucas, are listed as a globally Near-Threatened species by the IUCN Species Survival Commission. Their populations are increasingly threatened by fisheries, habitat destruction, climate change, and other human-induced activities. In South Africa, Zambezi shark populations are thought to be experiencing localized population declines and they are similarly considered a near-threatened species. Despite this, however, virtually no regulations exist to protect this important apex predator.

Summer Yellowtail and Cob

Fishing has been absolutely superb these last two weeks on Awesome Charters in Struisbaai. With great weather we had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time on the water, mostly at the 6 Mile bank (Blougansie) and at the 12 Mile bank, but we also had the chance to hunt cob on the shallow reefs.

Most of the trips were out to the 6 mile bank where plenty of yellowtail were shoaling. Most of the fish were caught while trolling small feathers behind the boat, but we also managed some fish on spinners and jigs. Both these last two methods were responsible for a lot of fun. Getting feeding yellowtail on a spinner and light outfit always produces exhilirating runs and lots of encouraging shouts from other anglers.

Experts probe deadly SA shark attacks

Port St Johns - The beach is a breathtaking site, the Indian Ocean rolling endlessly toward dramatic hills of lush forest sloping down to the powdery sand.

But Port St Johns beach in the Eastern Cape is among the world's deadliest for shark attacks, with five fatalities in five years, three in 2009 alone.

"We're probably the most unsafe beach in the world at the moment," said Michael Gatcke, who from the veranda of his guesthouse witnessed a teenage surfer being mauled in January.

As for what is causing the sharks to attack, "It's easy to speculate but hard to pinpoint what it actually is," he said.

Theories for the attack surge range from the shark-drawing blood of ceremonial animal sacrifices by traditional healers on the beach, to loud onshore music or a curse on surfers and lifesavers who have been the only victims.

Something fishy in R1bn patrol tender

A POLITICALLY connected consortium which owns one of the country's biggest fishing companies has secured a nearly R1-billion tender to police South Africa's fishing industry at sea.

Top empowerment firm Sekunjalo Investments heads the consortium.

This has triggered concerns that the company is set to become both player and referee in the policing of the country's R2-billion-a-year fishing industry.

Sekunjalo owns a majority stake in Premier Fishing, which is active in several fisheries including rock lobster, anchovies, pilchard, hake and squid.

A senior industry source said giving a fishing company influence over the country's patrol fleet was a case of "the wolf guarding the hen house".
