NEW FORMAT - Over 150 Species to fish for
The 25 Species Angling competition is a unique angling competition with a unique scoring system. The competition is open to all saltwater anglers from South Africa with the only qualifications being that an angler has to be a member of www.25species.co.za. The competition caters not only to the experienced anglers, but also to the juniors and ladies. Starting from 1 September 2010 and running till 31 July 2011 we will all fish for our respective top 25 species of fish.
The competition will be fished on a measure-and-weigh basis with a unique way of scoring. We also promote conservation, and to that effect the competion allows a 10% bonus for all fish released and a 5% bonus for fish tagged.
For the 2010 - 2011 competition we have selected over 150 species of fish. This will give everyone anywhere in South Africa a fair chance to compete as you can now fish for the species endemic to your area and still score points.
- Points will be awarded for the top 17 edibles and 8 non edibles you catch.
- No more differntiation between rock and surf, off shore or kayak fisherman - everyone competes against everyone else.
- All catches must be uploaded with a photo of the measurements and your membership card. No exeptions! No pic AND membership card AND measuring tape, no points.
The Scoring System
- We us the current SA Heavy Line Class record measurements as the benchmark.
For example - the current SA Record for a Bronzie is 250 cm. If you catch a fish measuring 150 cm you will score150/250 *100 points (60 points). If you release the fish you will get an additional 10% added (6 points) for a total of 66 points. If the fish is tagged and released you will score an additional 5% (3) for a total of 69 points
- Additional points will be added for the number of different species you caught as a % of the 25 species - so if at the end of the competition you caught 5 different species of fish you will be allocated a bonus of 20%. If you catch 13 out of the 25 species you will have an additional 52% bonus allocated.
- To qualify for 100% bonus you have to catch at least 17 edibles and 8 non edibles. You cannot score more than 100% bonus, no matter how many species you catch.
- Only the biggest fish / specie will count towards your points, not the total amount of a specific species, eg if you catch 5 Cob during the year only the biggest one will count.
- A 10% bonus will be awarded for fish released
- An additional 5% bonus will be awarded for fish tagged prior to release. To qualify for this bonus you have to upload a photo of the tagging card as well.

The Rules
- The competition is open to all registered members of www.25species.co.za
- There is a regsitration fee of R50 / angler to cover the cost of the Membership card.
- All weights will be calculated using the SASAA measure to weight tables
- All catches must confirm to the legal sizes and catch restrictions according to the SASSI booklet
- All catches must be verified by means of a photograph with the membership card and measuring tape clearly visible. These photographs along with the details of the catch including measurement, date and place of catch must be uploaded to the Forum.
- If you took a photo without your membership card and measuring tape visible your catch will not count. This include catches during a recognised competition.
- Only fish caught with a Rod and Reel will count - no handlines / nets etc
- Devices such as sliders, balloons, kites, bait boats etc are permissable.
- Only fish caught within the borders of South Africa will count.
We feel this competition levels the playing field between the Off-Shore and Rock and Surf guys, and also between the anglers going mostly for sharks and rays as opposed to those anglers going mostly for edibles. It will also "force" (meant in a very friendly way) you to start targeting different species of fish.
